A map is a snapshot. It represents the environment at the time of capture with high accuracy. The environment does not hold that shape indefinitely. Industrial sites are reconfigured as operations evolve. Construction progresses through port and urban environments over months. Outdoor spaces change with seasons, usage patterns, and maintenance cycles. A rack row is added to a warehouse. A temporary partition is installed during a renovation. A shipping container is repositioned in a yard.
Localization works by finding consistency between what the system expects to see (the map) and what it actually observes (the incoming sensor data). When the map accurately represents the current state of the environment, that consistency is high and the pose estimate is reliable. When the map has drifted from reality, consistency degrades. The system continues producing pose estimates, but they are computed against a reference that no longer corresponds to the physical world.
The failure mode is particularly dangerous because it is gradual and unannounced. The system does not stop working. Hundreds of correct localizations are followed by ones that are subtly wrong, then increasingly wrong. The discrepancy between the map and the world accumulates quietly over weeks or months until a visible failure (a collision, a missed waypoint, an incorrect pick) makes the problem apparent.
