Driving the future of autonomous logistics

Navya develops Level 4 autonomous solutions, designed for shuttles and tow tractors, to safely transport people and heavy equipment in dynamic industrial and logistical environments. The tow tractors, which haul large and long trailers with unconventional dimensions, operate both indoors and outdoors, covering nearly 2,000 km and more than 1,000 hours autonomously per year each. These operations, running 215 days per year, tackle a key industrial challenge: reducing human risk in high-traffic areas while boosting efficiency and throughput across industrial sites.

Tackling the hardest navigation challenges

Operating in constantly changing environments presents formidable challenges. Indoor spaces are GPS-denied, site layouts shift hourly, and a large proportion of objects are non-permanent. Maneuvering unconventional trailers safely demands precise control. Ensuring autonomous operations remain reliable, safe, and fully integrated into the logistics chain is essential, particularly as Navya’s vehicles are certified under the Machinery Directive (13849) and CE standards, without any human intervention during driving task.

Ultra-precise 3D maps delivering centimetric absolute positioning for lidar localization

Exwayz provides ultra-high-precision 3D mapping, a strong asset for Level 4 autonomy. These maps serve as the reference for LiDAR-based localization, enabling redundancy with other localization sources.

Without this level of mapping accuracy, the expected level of operability could not be reached, as conflicting sources would prevent the vehicle from operating reliably under standards requested by final customer. Exwayz captures the full complexity of both indoor and outdoor environments, creating georeferenced maps thanks to its very low drift SLAM technology and loop closure capabilities. This high-quality map feeds seamlessly the Navya mapping pipeline process, enabling enhanced refence for the autonomous driving system. Ensuring global consistency of the map at indoor and outdoor transitions in particular, is critical to enable fully autonomous operations.

In addition, continuous updates of the 3D maps, along with the extension of supported use cases enabled by Exwayz 3D mapping, represent a key asset to increase system flexibility without impacting on-site operations. This capability allows for rapid adaptation of the mapped environment to evolving operational needs, while maintaining the high level of accuracy required for reliable localization. As a result, new scenarios can be integrated seamlessly, ensuring both scalability of deployments and consistency with the performance and safety standards expected for Level 4 autonomous systems.

LiDAR-based localization on 3D maps for reliable accuracy, anytime and anywhere

Building on these maps, Exwayz delivers real-time LiDAR-based localization, critical part for the localization in GNSS-denied areas, such as indoor logistics halls. Despite the numerous mobile elements constantly moving around the vehicle, the stored material which is moved from one place to another all day long, Exwayz localization software ensures centimetric level of accuracy without being disturbed by the usual activity taking place on the operating site.

This robust localization contributes handling large and long trailers with unconventional dimensions while remaining fully integrated into the logistics chain.

From Europe to Japan

Exwayz technology is now supporting Navya’s autonomous system into industrial site in Japan, a milestone in international logistic mobility. The deployment inside AT135 Tract, realized through collaboration with Charlatte Manutention - FAYAT Group and Macnica, demonstrates the solution’s reliability and its high-performance level, in a real-world industrial logistics chain.

Fully integrated with safe L4 autonomy, the AT135 tow tractor enhances operational efficiency by intelligently automating material transport, showing that Exwayz’ 3D mapping and localization technology can scale globally.
